| HIGHLIGHTS OF TOUR: Chichen Itza is probably the best known Mayan archaeological site, capital of the ancient Mayan civilization. Experience the majestic past as you travel back in time. For people interested in exploring one of the richest cultures in the world. Founded in 445 B.C., Chichen Itza was an important ceremonial center, being inhabited until 1204, when it was mysteriously abandoned. The largest and most important structure (75 ft high) is the Castle, the stairs of which end in two large serpent heads. During the equinox' (March 21st and September 21st), the sun casts shadows on the steps creating the effect of a snake wriggling down the face of the pyramid. Test the acoustics of the ball court, visit the mysterious observatory, the sacred well and many other interesting temples. |
